Take a Road Trip Through the Texas Hill Country
Summer is the perfect time to hop in the car and discover the sights and sounds of the Texas Hill Country. From fields of Texas bluebonnets, to one-of-a-kind Fredericksburg wineries - Texans know how to embrace the good life. Here's our guide to the perfect roadtrip through Texas. When you road trip, getting there becomes a huge part of the vacation experience. Though you could hop on the interstate and head straight to the Texas Hill Country, there's never been a better time to take the scenic route. Plan to tack an hour or two onto your drive to La Cantera and see the landmarks that you have yet to cross off your Texas road trip bucket list.
From Houston
If you live in Houston, you probably know that the quickest way to arrive in San Antonio is to hop on I-10 East. What you may not know is that you can meander through several small towns that only add about 30 minutes to the trip—stops not included.
Hruska's Store & Bakery
Find this bakery in small town Ellinger, just off Highway 71. This is actually an authentic Czech bakery, so you'll be able to try unique sweet and savory treats like kolaches.
The Painted Churches
The towns of Dubina, High Hill, Ammannsville, and Praha each have their own painted church. See one or make a point to see all three elaborately painted interiors.
Winedale Historical Complex
Step back into the nineteenth century through Winedale's five homes, a one-room schoolhouse, a rare four-square barn, and more, each decorated for the period.
Junk Gypsy Store
Junk Gypsy rose to fame via HGTV, and has since put tiny Round Top, Texas, on the map. Shop antiques, cowboy boots, unique wearables, and more.
From Austin
Spend just under two hours cruising down I-35 and you'll find yourself in the Hill Country in no time. But if you make a day of the trip, you'll have all the time you need to see lakes, parks, museums, and more—some of which don't even require a detour.
Canyon Lake
Taking a dip is only one of many things you can do on this detour. Take in the views at the overlook or swing by Comal Park for a picnic.
Wimberly Valley Winery
Head southwest of Austin to experience Wimberly Valley. Sip wine on their patio or make reservations for a tasting experience.
Natural Bridge Caverns
Explore the world below Texas at Natural Bridge Caverns. Tour the caverns, learn to pan for gold, or make your way through an outdoor maze.
Blue Hole Regional Park
The Blue Hole Swimming Area is the central fixture of this regional park. Go for a hike on the trails, then cool off in the Guadalupe River.
From Dallas
Dallas and San Antonio are separated by just a four-hour stretch of I-35. Though you can get to the city without leaving the interstate, there's also something to be said for taking a detour or two.
Hidden Falls Adventure Park
Snag a pass and go for a ride at Hidden Falls Adventure Park, which offers meandering and exciting trails for dirt bikes, full size 4x4's, ATVs, and UTVs.
Mother Neff State Park
Southwest of Waco you'll find Mother Neff State Park, one of the first state parks in Texas. Stop for a picnic, enjoy the wildflowers, or even embark on a geocaching adventure.
Lake Travis Zipline Adventures
Plunge down the longest and fastest zipline in Texas for an exhilirating break from the car. You can even go on a five-zipline tour that includes a journey by boat.
Magnolia Market at the Silos
Swing through Waco for a stop at their Magnolia Market and a pastry at their Baking Co. You may even find inspiration for a post-vacation home makeover.
Around the Hill Country
The Texas Hill Country gives new meaning to "life's a highway." Enrich your getaway to La Cantera by exploring the sights and sounds that make the Hill Country so unique. Wineries, rolling hills, ranches, and more set this piece of Texas apart from other rural areas. Amid all the relaxing, be sure you also make time to venture off the resort to explore.
Texas Wildflowers
Texas is home to more than 5,000 species of wildflowers, and thanks to Lady Bird Johnson and the launch of the Highway Beautification Act, you can take in the splendor of these blooms from the comforts of your car. Try Farm Road 1323 in the spring for some of the state’s best wildflowers.
Discover Texas Wine
Over 50 unique wineries got their start scattered throughout the region’s scenic countryside. Here, you can sip everything from Italian varietals to Rhone-style wines.
Find a Watering Hole
Natural springs and sceneic watering holes are the perfect way to cool off on a hot summer day. A few to add to your list: Blue Hole in Wimberly, Hamilton Pool, Krause Springs, Blanco State Park, Pace Bend Park, and Barton Springs in Austin.
